Deliberate Practice in Academics
Deliberate practice in academics is the explicit, systematic, feedback-driven development of learning skills through a student’s existing schoolwork. Instead of just completing assignments, students use them to intentionally strengthen the skills that drive success in school and beyond: time management, executive functioning, critical thinking, resourcefulness, focus, and more.
It’s the mechanism that pays down the skills debt. And it’s not extra homework. It’s a new way of using the work your teen is already doing.
Where deliberate practice comes from
For over 30 years, psychologist Anders Ericsson of Florida State University studied expert performers – musicians at Juilliard, chess grandmasters, Olympic athletes, groundbreaking scientists – trying to answer one question: what makes someone exceptional at what they do?
His research revealed that it wasn’t talent. It wasn’t hours of practice. It was a specific type of practice. Intentional. Systematic. Focused on building a specific skill, for a particular aim, through practice, feedback, and reflection.
He called it deliberate practice: a systematic approach to skills development that “makes it possible to do things we never could before” (Ericsson & Pool, Peak, p. 27).
Deliberate practice is proven, powerful, and woefully underused. Some people know it from elite sport or music. Almost nobody applies it to school.
That’s the problem. And it’s the opportunity.
About ten years ago, I discovered Ericsson’s research, saw how directly it applied to teens learning how to learn, and incorporated it into my pedagogy. I’ve spent the decade since using deliberate practice with over 2,000 students. Long story short: it works.
How most students work
Most students approach their work on autopilot. They react to whatever has been assigned. They re-read notes, highlight textbooks, and grind through homework to get it done and off their plate.
What they’re doing feels like effort, and it might even feel productive.
But it’s largely passive, and the goal is completion, not improvement.
Picture this: your teen sits down to study for a history test. They re-read their notes. They highlight passages. They spend two hours studying, take the test, and get a C. They’re frustrated. You’re frustrated. They say, “I studied so hard.” And they think they did. They put in the hours.
But what they were doing wasn’t effective studying. They were reviewing the same material over and over, creating the illusion of learning. Because students are taught what to know, not how to learn, it’s easy to conflate effort with effective learning.
Deliberate practice flips that. Instead of just completing an assignment, your teen uses that assignment to intentionally strengthen a specific learning skill: how they manage their time, break down a complex task, retain material, problem-solve when stuck, or push through when something feels hard.
The goal shifts from completion to improvement. This changes not only their grades, but what they believe they’re capable of.
The five components of deliberate practice in academics
1. Build strong foundations first.
Students master fundamental skills before tackling advanced ones. Before managing a complex semester schedule in university, they learn to plan a single week for a single subject. Before taking notes in a 90-minute lecture, they learn to take notes on a 10-minute video.
2. Use proven methods.
No reinventing the wheel. Students pair the intention to improve with strategies proven to deliver results for time management, studying, self-motivation, focus and more. No hoping. No guesswork.
3. Expand the comfort zone.
Deliberate practice “requires a student to try things that are just beyond their current abilities,” and this is “generally not enjoyable” (Ericsson & Pool, p. 99). Growth happens outside the comfort zone, and discomfort means they’re learning something challenging. A student who has never used a calendar may feel awkward plugging in self-imposed deadlines. A student who has always re-read the teacher’s slides might resist creating their own study guide. In my experience, once students try this approach and start seeing results, they buy into the process on their own.
4. Focus with intention on a specific skill.
Deliberate practice doesn’t happen on autopilot. It requires conscious action, which amounts to a “series of small changes that add up to the desired larger change” (Ericsson & Pool, p. 99). It’s mindful practice with a specific aim, not mechanical repetition hoping for vague improvement.
5. Get feedback, adjust, repeat.
At first, someone guides the student: giving instruction, monitoring progress, pointing out problems, offering solutions. Over time, the student builds a frame of reference for the right way to do something – manage their time, study, write an essay, stay focused. That’s what enables them to self-monitor, notice when something is off, and correct it themselves (Ericsson & Pool, p. 100).
What it looks like: building time management
Most students think they need “better time management.” That’s the kind of vague overall improvement that deliberate practice rejects. Time management is made up of specific sub-skills, and those are what we practice:
Scope: how long will this take? Break the assignment into steps and estimate the time for each. Guesstimating to start is fine; the more they practice, the more accurate their scoping becomes.
Plan: when will I do it? A specific day and time is selected.
Map: put it in the calendar. External system over memory, every time.
In our work, we build these skills from Week 1 across all subjects, meeting several times per week to monitor, assess and adjust. To practice at home, start smaller:
- Week 1: pick one assignment from any subject. Scope it, plan it, map it.
- Week 2: pick two assignments from different subjects. Same sequence. Notice: the skill works for history AND math AND science.
- Week 3: apply it to every assignment that week. Reflect each Friday: did the estimates match reality? Did the planned work happen? If not, how come?
By weeks 4 to 6, the practice is paying off. Schoolwork feels easier. Less stress and scrambling. The student realizes they were never bad at time management; they just hadn’t been practicing the right way. By weeks 6 to 8, most teens willingly and increasingly habitually break down assignments, plan backwards, and use their calendar.
That’s one skill. The same logic builds studying, focus, self-motivation, resourcefulness, and more.
Stop climbing seven mountains
School is designed around subjects, so it’s normal for families to think about school success primarily in terms of subjects. A low grade is typically interpreted as a subject problem, which means a subject solution: a tutor, a learning centre, more hours dedicated to that subject.
From the student’s side, that framing is overwhelming. Math is a giant mountain. English is a separate mountain. Science, chemistry, civics: more mountains. Six or seven Mt. Everests, plus extracurriculars, test prep, a social life. It’s no wonder so many capable kids are stressed or feel constantly behind.
The shift is to stop focusing on subjects and start focusing on the skills required to do well in ALL subjects. Critical thinking, communication, time management, executive functioning, metacognition: these skills build bridges between subjects and create a unified learning experience out of seven separate subjects.
Instead of scrambling to climb seven mountains, we want our teens to build the skill set to conquer any mountain.
Schoolwork is the perfect training ground to develop core skills through deliberate practice. Students have assignments, quizzes or tests most weeks, across four to six or more subjects, for 36 weeks a year. That’s hundreds of opportunities per year to deliberately practice core skills. Every history essay, English paper, math test and science quiz is a rep.
The difference between a student who uses even a portion of those reps and one who doesn’t starts to show within weeks. The difference five years from now is enormous.
What changes?
With deliberate practice in an academic context, teens go from disorganized to organized. From procrastinating to proactive. From late work to early submissions. From chasing better grades to building the skills that produce better grades.
These transformations happen because the brain changes in response to this type of training. As Ericsson put it: “it’s possible to shape the brain – your brain, my brain, anybody’s brain – in the ways we desire through deliberate practice” (Ericsson & Pool, p. 36).

Deliberate practice targets a specific weakness, works just beyond current ability, and uses expert feedback to adjust. For example: think of studying by re-reading notes for two hours as regular practice. Creating a study guide, engaging with the material, taking a timed practice quiz, assessing remaining gaps and mapping next steps to bridge them: this is deliberate practice.
No, and this matters: deliberate practice in academics is not extra homework. It’s a new way of using the work your teen is already doing. The assignments don’t change. The approach to them does.
Yes, and it targets exactly the skills these students often need most. Learning differences can make executive functioning skills – planning, self-monitoring, task initiation – harder to pick up on their own, which is precisely why explicit, structured, feedback-driven practice matters. Rather than leaving these skills to develop by chance, deliberate practice builds them directly and with certainty.
With consistent practice inside real schoolwork, most students feel the difference within a few weeks: less scrambling, earlier submissions, easier studying, more confidence, more self-motivation. In my work with students, the first couple of weeks are the heaviest for clarity and external accountability, and most students master and self-sustain the fundamentals from there.
You can start, and the weekly time management progression above is a good first step. The honest caveat: teens are often not receptive to sustained parental intervention in their schoolwork, and deliberate practice depends on feedback from someone who can see what’s off and knows how to correct it. That’s why mentorship, from someone other than the parent, is often what makes the practice stick.
